Company Profile:

James F Stephen Architects are a dynamic, award-winning Architectural Practice with experience of creating award-winning buildings across a diverse range of building types.

We work with clients to create thoughtfully considered, dynamic projects that seek to exceed expectations.

As well as offering our "core" architectural services, we can also offer interior design, planning, landscape design, conservation accredited architectural services and adjudication services from within our enthusiastic and diverse in-house team.

Established in 1977 by our founding partner Fred Stephen, we have established a reputation as one of Scotland’s leading design practices winning numerous local, national and international architectural awards and competitions.

From our head office in Glamis, Angus and our central Scotland office in Stirling city centre, we work with clients to create building solutions which will not only satisfy their current and future requirements but which will have facets of interest exceeding their expectations. We are able to offer the unique combination of local knowledge with international experience.

Through design excellence balanced with commercial awareness, professionalism and a careful attention to detail, our aim is to produce carefully composed, innovative and dynamic, aesthetically pleasing buildings.  We endeavour to respond to the site, its context and to carefully consider both environmental and conservation issues.  We believe that good design adds quality and value to projects.

Our attention to these core values has seen our practice grow to become one of the best-resourced practices in Scotland.

We have extensive experience of both private and commercial projects, from individual homes and extensions to multi-unit residential developments, public buildings, mixed-use developments and specialist conservation projects.

We will work with you to develop your project from the initial ideas and assisting in refining/rationalising your brief through to the completion of the project and beyond.  We will assist you through the statutory legislation processes and construction phases with an overall aim of making the whole design/construction process as straightforward as possible.

We have recent experience of completed projects across a variety of building types in the incorporation of sustainable design and renewable energy technologies, including the installation of different types of heat pumps, biomass, various forms of solar energy (photo-voltaic, passive and thermal solar), rainwater harvesting and passive ventilation.

All of our Architects are ARB registered and also enjoy Chartered status as members of both RIAS and RIBA.  In addition to this 3 of our Architect partners are “Fellows” of RIAS – the most senior level of membership available and recognition of the experience and track-record which the practice can draw upon in assisting our clients.  Our core team of Chartered Architects are backed-up by an experienced technical and administrative team and extensive technical and technological resources.

In addition to the above “individual” accreditations and memberships, we are an RIBA Chartered Practice, RIAS Practice Services member, Investors In People Accredited and Constructionline Registered.  We have also achieved registration under BS EN ISO 9001:2008 (Quality Management), BS EN ISO 14001:2004 (Environmental Management) and BS OHSAS 18001:2007 (Occupational Health & Safety Management).

In appointing James F Stephen Architects you will benefit from a wealth of knowledge, including access to our in-house “advanced” accredited Conservation Architectural knowledge, detailed knowledge of Planning legislation/procedures, current Building Regulations, detailed technical knowledge and various forms of procurement/contracts.  We aim to provide a reliable, efficient and comprehensive service which is focused on your needs.
